Designer Spotlight: Hannah & Co

Tell us about yourself

I grew up with a mother who was a creative and a designer and would come home to a completely rearranged house! It was full of amazing things too; so design has been in my blood. But after a career in marketing communications in London and Melbourne, our own home renovation was what led to a stronger interest and desire to establish a design business and help others create spaces that are uniquely them.

My mother and I (and a long line of creative and strong women before us) share the same middle name, Hannah, so my business name and idea was born from that and creating a legacy to honor her.

Almost ten years in business, I now work with both residential and commercial clients and am all about the customer service experience. With a background in people and communications, that’s my strength. I like to make people feel special and heard.

What’s your secret sauce for great design

My secret sauce is making a design both functional and beautiful. I mean that is the definition of good design, but I deliver this by really getting to know my clients and their needs, and delivering a design that is timeless and elegant but always with an element of surprise.

I really dislike a cookie cutter approach and truly believe in designing to the individual or the business.

I also love working with colour and seem to be known for my use of colour. And I also treat Clients’ money like it’s my own; so a very authentic and genuine approach to great design.

What do you enjoy most about being a designer?

I love the freedom of creating and working with people I like and surrounding myself in beautiful design and things and calling this work! I also love creating a space for a client that is beyond their expectations and seeing them so happy and grateful.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration in nature. Nature is the true master of design. I also love travelling and discovering new places and get much inspiration this way also.

How has being part of the IDA community supported or influenced your journey? Or, what prompted you to join the IDA?

I joined the IDA when I moved up from Melbourne to connect with fellow designers and get the lay of the land in Brisbane and over the years have enjoyed meeting fellow designers, talking ‘shop’ and leaning into the group and enjoying the sense of community.
