One of the greatest strengths of the Interior Design Association is the way it brings creative professionals together — often leading to collaborations that may never have happened otherwise. A recent IDA member partnership between aerial fine-art photographer Francois Detaille, and gallery owner Jan Manton, is a perfect example of the opportunities that can emerge through the power of connection.
The two first met at last year’s IDA Product Showcase, where Francois was presenting his portfolio, including his new series, ṈATURE. During the event, fellow member Robyn Kirk introduced him to Jan, who was attending as part of the visiting group.
What began as a brief conversation at the end of the showcase quickly evolved into something much bigger.
“Jan suggested I follow up with a proposal and a curated selection of works,” Francois explains. “We then met at her gallery, and that’s where this fruitful collaboration truly began.”
The result was a carefully curated exhibition that combined Jan’s extensive experience in contemporary art and gallery curation with Francois’ distinct artistic vision. Together, they created an exhibition that not only elevated the presentation of the artwork, but also drew a full house on opening night: “We had record numbers, over 100 people at the opening event, and lots of visitors during Francois’ exhibition” said Jan.
For both collaborators, the partnership highlights the unique value of working within the IDA community.
“It fosters genuine and trustful connections based on the high standards of IDA members,” Francois says. “It’s also a way to share opportunities with the wider IDA group, creating more opportunities across the board.”
The association also played an important role in amplifying the exhibition itself. The IDA network was invited to attend, introducing the work to interior designers, decorators and stylists, while opening the door to potential future projects and collaborations.
When asked what advice they would offer other members looking to create similar opportunities, the answer was simple: get involved.
“I would encourage members to attend IDA social events and product shows,” says Francois. “There is always a positive experience that comes from them, with beautiful opportunities waiting to be discovered.”
This collaboration is a reminder that some of the most meaningful professional relationships begin with a single conversation — and that the IDA community continues to be a place where creativity, connection and opportunity thrive.
