Sharron – Delivering Art-based Technologies that make the environment become a part of everyday dementia care
Sharron T MIDA is an internationally sought-after keynote speaker, independent researcher and pioneer of Art-based Technologies (ABTs) for dementia care. Art-based Technologies (ABTs) are purposeful, evidence-informed art interventions integrated into the built environment to support perception, wayfinding, engagement and wellbeing. Their imagery, scale, contrast, materials and placement are designed together, creating coordinated visual systems that function throughout everyday life.
For more than 18 years, Sharron has brought art into health and aged care environments, with 60 installations across Australia. Her work with providers including Regis, Blue Care, Australian Unity and Arcare has shaped a distinctive question: How can art change the way a person perceives and uses a space?
The answer begins with the science of visual attention, spatial recognition and wayfinding. Sharron assesses a facilities architecture and the triggers that it presents to its aged care residents living with dementia. Then, based on the floor plan she selects and places the ABTs to create a facility-wide wayfinding system, inside and out. These are coordinated environmental interventions, designed to work across doors, walls, windows, signage and communal spaces throughout everyday life. They include Artful Signage, Artful Outlooks, Outdoor Murals, Themed Spaces, Room Door Personalisations, Clinical and Exit Door Disguises and more.
Sharron’s research and conference presentations bring this approach to international audiences, connecting neuroscience, neuroaesthetics, dementia care and interior design.
